Betty Jean Brown, age 92, of Venice, FL died September 17, 2021. She was born November 2, 1928 in Yalobusha County to the late T.G. and Sadelle (Perkins) Brown.
Betty Jean’s family moved to Washington D.C. when she was a small child. She later moved to New York City to pursue acting and starred in several Broadway and Off-Broadway plays acting beside several actors and actresses who would later become famous, including Jean Stapleton, Rue McClanahan and Uta Hagen.
In addition to acting, Betty Jean painted sets and worked in numerous production support roles in theaters. She also sang in the New York Metropolitan Opera Chorus in several productions. Betty lived a short distance from TImes Square and loved the hustle and bustle of New York. Later she became a substitute teacher and taught in Harlem and in a women’s correctional facility.
In the early 1990’s, Betty Jean moved back to Water Valley to help care for her mother. While living here, she sang with the United Voices of Praise for several years. In 2013, she moved to Sarasota Florida, and later to Venice where she lived until her passing.

A memorial service will be held in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home at 11:00 AM, October 25, 2021.

Betty is survived by several cousins, including Johnny Perkins and Betty Davis, both of Water Valley.
