Dennis Edward McMinn, 91, passed away at the Yalobusha County Nursing Home on Sunday, February 12, 2023. A visitation will be held Sunday, February 19, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Gardiner Room, with a funeral service immediately following at 2:00 PM, in the Henry Chapel. Internment will be at Jumper’s Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Randy Bain will officiate. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dennis was born on April 28, 1931 and was the only son of the late Dennis and Catherine McMinn. He considered himself a fortunate man. Dennis had a wife and family that he loved, a job that he enjoyed and was a man of faith which gave him an unwavering ground to stand upon. Like his parents before him, he was a man of integrity.
Dennis graduated from Water Valley Highschool in 1950, and soon afterwards enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with pride. In 1952, Dennis married the love of his life, Loy McCullar McMinn, and they moved to Memphis, TN where he began a career in the railroad industry, first with Illinois Central Railroad and later for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Dennis and Loy raised four boys in Memphis. Dennis coached Little League baseball and was an active part of his children’s lives.
After over thirty years in Memphis, Dennis retired to his farm in Water Valley, MS, with his always smiling wife, Loy. He enjoyed working with his cows and spending life in the country. Dennis really loved bird hunting and fishing and usually hosted a dove hunt and a fish fry every September. He treasured being around his family and friends. At family events, Dennis was the drawing card, luring everyone in with his funny stories in a booming voice that often captivated those around him. To say the least, he was very outgoing.
Dennis was active in his community as a member of the Lion’s Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and a Deacon and member of First Baptist Church of Water Valley. His character and spirit will be missed by all.
Dennis is survived by his two sons, Allan and Scott McMinn; his sisters, Myra Edwards, of Louisville, MS, Kate (Benny) Butts, of Water Valley, and Mary John (Robert) Turnage, of Water Valley; his grandchildren, Chastity (John) Simmons and Kirsten McMinn; and four greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loy McCullar McMinn; his two sons, Tim and Gary McMinn; and one grandson, Zane McMinn.
