Elton Geams Nelson, a beloved father, friend, and community member, departed this world on May 14, 2026, just ten days shy of his 93rd birthday. Born on May 24, 1933, in Coffeeville, Mississippi, Elton's journey through life was filled with love, adventure, and service.
Elton graduated from Jeff Davis School, where he first met his high school sweetheart, Ruby Fay Gordon. They tied the knot on October 17, 1953, embarking on a life together that would take them across the country during Elton's time in the Army. From the bustling halls of the Pentagon to their eventual home in Southaven, Mississippi, Elton and Ruby built a family filled with warmth and laughter. Together, they raised three wonderful sons: Wesley, Elton, and Terry.
After his honorable discharge in 1959, Elton and family settled in Southaven, MS and dedicated himself to his career as a shipping clerk at Buckeye Cellulose, but his commitment to his community did not stop there. He was a charter member of Carriage Hills Baptist Church, where he offered his time and talents to serve others, embodying the true spirit of a caring neighbor. Elton's zest for life shone through in his involvement with the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the PTA, nurturing the next generation with love and support. His passion for scouting and camping created cherished memories for his family and many young adventurers.
We invite all who knew and loved Elton to celebrate his remarkable life. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Seven Oaks Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 12:00 PM. Following the service, Elton will be laid to rest at Broom Cemetery in Coffeeville, Mississippi.
Elton will be remembered not just for his contributions to his community but for his unwavering love for his family and the laughter he brought to those around him.
Elton is survived by his three sons, Elton Nelson, Jr, Terry Nelson, and Wesley Nelson; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Elton was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Virginia (O'Brian) Nelson; his wife Ruby Fay (Gordon) Nelson; four brothers; and one sister.
