It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Michael Jenkins, a dedicated firefighter and cherished family man, who departed this life on June 27, 2026, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Born on January 9, 1951, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Mickey, as he was affectionately known, lived a life marked by service, passion, and devotion to his community.
A proud graduate of Water Valley High School, Mickey excelled in academics and athletics, notably as a key player on the Blue Devil football team, contributing as both an offensive and defensive lineman before graduating in 1969. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his career, as he dedicated 28 years to the Oxford City Fire Department, where he was admired for his bravery and unwavering work ethic. After retiring from the fire department, he worked as a County supervisor and at the University of Mississippi as a fire inspector.
In addition to his noteworthy career, Mickey had a profound love for music and was skilled in playing various instruments, with the guitar holding a special place in his heart. His passions extended beyond music; he found joy in fishing, riding motorcycles and classic cars.
Mickey was a distinguished member of the Masonic community, holding a 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite and York Rite. He was an active participant in several Masonic organizations, including Valley City Lodge #402, McConico Chapter #96, J.J. Melton Council #50, and St. Cyr Commandery #6. His affiliation with the Clarksdale Valley Scottish Rite in Clarksdale, MS, and his membership in the Wahabi Shriners, Oxford Shrine Club and Water Valley #5 Eastern Star highlighted his commitment to fraternity and community service.
Mickey is survived by his beloved daughters, Monica Brandalin "Brandy" Jenkins of Oxford, MS and Rebecca Rushing (Jason) of Water Valley, MS; his son, Adam Jenkins (Nikki) of Water Valley; and five cherished grandchildren, Cameron Halbert (Bailey), Dixie Jenkins, Reed Jenkins, Laken Halbert, and Ivy Claire Jenkins, as well as one great-grandchild, Tommy Judd Roberts. He is also survived by his brother, Rick Jenkins (Deana) of Water Valley, MS.
Friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation in the Gardiner Room of Seven Oaks Funeral Home Wednesday, July 1, 2026 beginning at 11:00 AM. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks. Mickey will be buried at Oak Hill Cemetery with Cameron Halbert, Reed Jenkins, Tim Whitehead, Terry Whitehead, Colby Roberts, Matt Lucas and Julian Gray serving as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Hale, Joe Pace, Billy Bonds, Bobby Goolsby, Clearence Williams, and Kenny Tidwell.
Mickey will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for his community will forever remain in our hearts.
Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, Mike Jenkins and Emmie Faye (Howell) Jenkins.
