Jerleen Harris

Jerleen Mathis Harris, affectionately known as "Gran," passed away on June 17, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born on July 13, 1941, in Water Valley, Mississippi, Jerleen was the daughter of the late Carmon and Sallie Mathis. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Shirley and Dean; her husband, Wayne "Punk" Harris; and her son, Wayne Harris.

Jerleen leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: a sister, Clemmie; her daughter-in-law Cheryl; grandsons, Ashley (Jennifer), Larry (Maggie), and Danny (Ashley); and her five great-grandchildren, Kenzie, Gavyn, Ella, Hannah, and Emmie.

A gifted seamstress, Jerleen dedicated much of her life to her craft. She spent many years working in the clothing industry at Big Yank, where she rose to the position of supervisor. After an initial attempt at retirement proved short-lived, she returned to work at Steele Manufacturing, where she served as a manager for the remainder of her career. Her talent extended far beyond the workplace. She lovingly created custom dresses, costumes, and special garments for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most importantly she was always ready with a needle and thread should a sewing emergency arise.

Jerleen also took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard. Friends and family admired her colorful flower gardens, most notably the impatiens and amaryllis which were among her favorites. Her efforts to beautify her yard serve as a reflection of the care and dedication she brought to every aspect of her life.

A woman of great strength and determination, Jerleen faced life's challenges with courage and resilience. Following the sudden passing of her husband shortly after his installation as county supervisor, she faithfully served in his place until the vacancy could be filled. Throughout her life, she took pride in her ability to care for herself and the people she loved.

Above all, Jerleen was a woman of deep Christian faith. She spoke often of her relationship with Christ and found comfort and confidence in the promise of eternal life. Her faith sustained her throughout her life and provided a source of hope and encouragement to those around her.

Jerleen's legacy lives on in the family she loved, the lives she touched, and the example of faith, strength, and selfless devotion she leaves behind.

A private funeral service will be held for family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which is dedicated to honoring America's defenders, veterans, first responders, and their families. DONATE
