Today we celebrate the life of Meri Jo Higdon, an unbelievably amazing woman who was a light in everyone's lives. Meri was 61 years old and passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis TN. She was born on September 5, 1964, in Big Spring, TX to the late Earl Miller Higdon and Barbara Jean Montgomery Higdon. She is survived by siblings, Jeffery Higdon (Karen) of Rockford, IL, Carrie Livingston (Eddie) of Waterford, MS, Gregory Higdon of Woodland MS, Patrick Higdon of Water Valley MS, and Jana Higdon of Batesville, MS and a host of nieces and nephews.
Meri was a long- time resident of Water Valley. Meri Jo means "beloved" or "wished for child." If you were fortunate enough to know Meri, it was easy to see why she was "wished for." She drew everyone to her with her kindness. She had a spirit that lit up every room she entered. She taught us compassion by the way she cared for others and resilience through her own example. She was always worried about others, calling to check on us and just making sure we were all okay. She was thoughtful, loving, and selfless when it came to her family. Her love was unconditional and her wisdom profound.
Meri was a daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Although she never birthed any children, she had a host of nieces and nephews that were "hers." She helped raise more than her share and was the "grandmother" most never had. They loved to go to "Aunt Meri's" and make home-made crafts, fun snacks and watch their favorite shows. But most importantly, they loved to go and sit and talk for hours about nothing. She was the listener we all needed.
Meri was an avid reader, a walking encyclopedia, and a huge trivia buff. She could read an entire John Grisham book in one day. She enjoyed listening to music, cooking, and dancing in her younger years. She also enjoyed arts and crafts. She loved the holidays and looked forward to being with the kids and all the festivities. But more importantly, she just enjoyed spending time with her family.
Meri was the support system of the family that everyone turned to when they were needing support or to hear another perspective. She was open-minded, wise, and truthful, sometimes telling us things we didn't really want to hear. Her family was the center of her universe and she relished every moment spent with them, whether it was sharing laughter over a meal or an hour conversation on the phone. Meri always put others above herself and was one of the most forgiving people. She was selfless and supportive. Her loved ones meant everything to her. She was so strong and went through so much but always tried to stay positive, trying not to burden others. Meri's warmth and kindness touched everyone she met, leaving an incredible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. She will forever be missed.
