Shirley Jane Carter, a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished member of her community, passed away on January 22, 2024, at the age of 79. She was born on August 10, 1944, in Bradford, Tennessee, to her parents who were pillars of their local church. Shirley's journey through life took her to different places, but she always carried her humble beginnings and strong faith with her, even as she served as Sunday School teacher at Rays Chapel in Courtland.
Growing up in Bradford, Shirley displayed a bright spirit and a deep passion for music. She sang in her father's church choir, enchanting all with her melodious voice. After graduating from Bradford High School in 1962, Shirley joined the workforce, first at Kellins Mfg in Greenfield, Tennessee, and after moving to Memphis, where she contributed to the success of Hunter Fan, St. Joseph Hospital and later, the TN dept of Health.
In 1968, Shirley embarked on a beautiful journey of love and companionship when she married the love of her life, James Carter. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and shared experiences. Shirley's love for her family knew no bounds, and she dedicated herself to being the best wife and mother that she could be.
Shirley's pursuits also included her education. She obtained an Associate's Degree and pursued her passion for healthcare by becoming a skilled Medical Records Technician. Her attention to detail and commitment to accuracy left an imprint on those she worked with, earning her the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout her career. Due to her health, Shirley would retire, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of professionalism and dedication.
In her free time, Shirley enjoyed immersing herself in her hobbies. Whether it was bowling when she was younger, sewing, fishing, curling up with a good book, or creating beautiful artwork, she found solace and fulfillment in these simple pleasures.
Shirley Jane Carter's departure from this world leaves behind a void that cannot be easily filled. She will be remembered for her warm smile, kind heart, and unwavering faith. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Carter; one daughter, Pamela (Darren) Brast ; one step-son, Rickey Carter; two grandchildren, Koral (Jeremy) Hogue, Ana Carter (Jesse Wilbanks); four great-grandchildren , Jeret Hogue, Emmie Hogue, Dixie Hogue and Cable Hogue; one daughter-in-law, Becky Carter.
As well as her parents, Shirley was predeceased by one son, David Carter; three sisters, Jeweldean Jones, Joyce Cates, Freedalyn Janice Harris; and one brother, Leamon Johns.
A a combined memorial service is planned for Shirley and her son, David Carter, Friday, February 9th, 2024 at 1PM in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Harry Camp officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before in the Gardiner room of Seven Oaks.
